Purim

Matanot L’Evyonim:

  • While giving Tzedakah, or money to the poor, is a Mitzvah all year round, there is a special Mitzvah to do so on Purim. This unique mitzvah is called Matanot L’Evyonim and is an obligation for all to fulfill.

    • To fulfill the mitzvah of Matanot L’Evyonim one must give charity to two individual poor people on Purim day.
    • Even a poor person is obligated in Matanot L’Evyonim.
    • One should give each poor person enough money to provide for a meal.
    • One may provide food instead of money to the poor.
    • It is preferable to give a greater amount of Matanot L’Evyonim and limit one’s Mishloach Manot.
    • In order to fulfill the mitzvah, one must make sure that the poor person receives the funds on Purim.
