The Eruv: Law, History, and Practice

Two Tuesday Evenings on Zoom:
October 20 at 7 pm: Law: How Does an Eruv Work? with Rabbi Howard Jachter Rabbi Jachter, rabbinic judge, worldwide expert on Eruvs, and rabbinic consultant for over 60 Eruvs around the US, will teach us the basic legal concepts of the Eruv and how it is planned and built
October 27 at 8 pm: A History Fraught with Controversy with Rabbi Adam Mintz Rabbi Mintz, who teaches Jewish History at City College and wrote his doctoral dissertation on the History of City Eruvin in America, will discuss challenges communities faced throughout American history in establishing their Eruvs - from within the Jewish community and without - and how they overcame them
Followed by a Sunday Morning Walking Tour (in person or on Zoom)
Sunday, November 1 at 10 AM: The Eruv in Practice Rabbi Bomzer, who oversaw the establishment and oversees the maintenance of the Albany Eruv, will lead a guided walking tour of a section of the Eruv
Presenter Bios:
Rabbi Howard Jachter has earned an international reputation as a Get (Jewish Divorce) Administrator, a consultant for over 60 community Eruvin, and a prolific writer. He has written many books on Jewish law and thought, most recently, Walking the Line: Hilchot Eruvin from the Sources to the Streets. Rabbi Jachter is a veteran teacher of Judaic Studies at Torah Academy of Bergen County, Rabbi of Congregation Shaarei Orah (the Sephardic Congregation of Teaneck) and a Dayan on the Beit Din of Elizabeth. He has lectured internationally on topics of Jewish Law, lifestyle and significance. Rabbi Jachter lives with his wife and five children in Teaneck, New Jersey.
Rabbi Dr. Adam Mintz is the founder and rabbi of Kehilat Rayim Ahuvim, a Modern Orthodox community on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. He is the Director of 929 English, a project that promotes the daily study of a chapter of the Tanakh through an updated webpage and social media. Rabbi Mintz is also an Adjunct Associate Professor of Jewish History at City College, New York. He completed his rabbinical ordination at Yeshiva University and received his doctorate at New York University. The topic of his dissertation was “Halakhah in America: The History of City Eruvin, 1894-1962.”
Rabbi Dr. Moshe Bomzer needs no introduction at Beth Abe. He served as Rabbi of CBAJ from 1984 to 2012. He is the Rav HaMachshir of the Vaad HaKashruth of the Capital District, chaplain at St. Peter's Hospital and at Albany Correctional Facility, and Rabbinic Advisor for the Chevra Kaddisha of the Capital District. He received his rabbinical ordination at Yeshiva University after pursuing Talmudic studies at Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim in Forest Hills, NY and Jerusalem, and at Yeshiva Ner Yisroel in Baltimore.
