MESSAGE FROM RABBI KEAN
Dear CBAJ Family,
I will be out of town this Shabbat and most of next week.
I continue to have all of you in my mind as we continue to be impacted by the heartbreaking news coming out of Israel, and around the world as antisemitic incidents continue to rise.
I have personally found tremendous meaning in the many opportunities that we have created as a community to come together during this difficult time. At the recent Senior Lunch & Learn this week, we started by sharing some of our personal connections to Israel. It was really amazing to see just how deep our community's ties to Israel are.
I look forward to many wonderful opportunities to learn and connect when we return. As we are progressing into the Fall, please see the Shabbat notes for information about our upcoming weekday classes and learning programs, scholar-in-residence, and other exciting upcoming programs.

MESSAGE FROM RABBI KEAN
Dear CBAJ Family,
Needless to say, this has been a dark and difficult week for the entire Jewish people. Words cannot possibly express the depths of our sorrow and anger over hearing of the news of the abhorrent and brutal slaughter of 1,200 Jews in Israel, Hashem Yikom D’meihem, by Hamas terrorists which cruelly targeted civilians, babies and young children, the elders, and the vulnerable, along with the taking of at least 150 hostages, including civilians of all ages, thousands more injured, and other brutal atrocities. Our hearts with Israel now more than ever.
We continue to urge you to look for opportunities to support Israel, including donating money (either to the Federation's fund, or any of the other organizations we recommended to you earlier), through prayer and learning, through personal outreach, and through political advocacy.
We have been in touch with the Jewish Federation as well as the authorities about our local safety. We have been assured that in spite of Hamas's despicable calls for "global jihad," we should feel safe continue normal activities. Local authorities are taking our security seriously, and we have coordinated with the Albany County Sheriff's office to have extra patrols in neighborhoods where congregants will be walking to and from CBAJ.
The impossible question now for me is: what should the mood of this Shabbat be? On the one hand, we cannot ignore our intense feelings of mourning, grief, and anger. We will be expressing these feelings with special prayers, including Avinu Malkeinu, normally not recited on Shabbat, but with Rav Herschel Schachter, Rosh Yeshiva at Yeshiva University and Senior Posek of the OU, is instructing communities to recite.
On the other hand, we cannot let Hamas or anyone else break our joy, our determination, our confidence, our love for Israel or being Jewish. In light of that, I encourage you to come to shul, and we will still be singing and celebrating Shabbat.
I know that this may be hard to do right now. But if it helps, please watch this widely-circulated video by a brave Israeli soldier, Arkie, encouraging Jews around the world to joyously celebrate this Shabbat as a sign of our resolve and determination.
Am Yisrael Chai.
Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Ben Kean

MESSAGE FROM RABBI KEAN
Halachic Notice: Rain on the First Night of Sukkot I am sharing this notice with you since it looks like the rain will continue all night on Sukkot.
Generally speaking, the halacha is that a “mitz’ta’er patur min hasukkah,” i.e., even though we are obligated to eat our meals, sleep, and otherwise live in the Sukkah, we are exempt from this mitzvah if the Sukkah is uncomfortable, and rain would make it uncomfortable to eat in the Sukkah.
On the first night of Sukkot, the halacha is a different because the first night of Sukkot, there is a higher level of obligation to have one’s meal in the Sukkah (the Talmud connects eating a meal in the Sukkah on the first night of Sukkot to the obligation to eat matzah at the Pesach Seder).
As such, ideally, a person should try to wait an hour or two after Tzeit HaKochavim (nightfall) to see if the rain will clear up and the Sukkah will be dry enough to eat it. If it does not, then Kiddush and HaMotzi should be done in the Sukkah, a kabeitzah (egg-size serving) of bread should be eaten in the Sukkah, and then the rest of the meal may be eaten indoors. The bracha of “leishev ba-sukkah” should NOT be recited in this case.
Please note: waiting 1 or 2 hours will likely not be practical in certain cases, such as families with young children who need to go to sleep, or people with diets that need to eat at specific times. Waiting a shorter time or foregoing waiting in these cases is acceptable.
Wishing you and your family a Shabbat Shalom and a Chag Sukkot Sameach, Rabbi Ben Kean

MESSAGE FROM RABBI KEAN
On behalf of Congregation Beth Abraham-Jacob, I would like to wish you and your family a restful and meaningful Shabbat.
It is hard to believe that it is already Rosh Chodesh Elul, meaning the Yamim Noraim (High Holidays) are already upon us.
Rav Schneur Zalman of Liadi (1745-1812, author of Tanya and founder of Chabad Chasidut) writes powerfully that the month of Elul is like the time that a king is traveling back to his palace from abroad. When the king is in the fields outside his city, he is more accessible to them than at any other point, when he is in his palace, and visitors must be vetted before meeting the king.
We are therefore meant to see this time as a season of the year when G-d is uniquely accessible to us, when we are called upon to reflect on our lives and recommit ourselves to G-d for the coming year.
We ought to take a hint from our Sefardi brethren, who begin reciting Selichot (midnight penitential prayers) on Rosh Chodesh Elul. (Personally, I think that is a lot harder than not being able to eat kitniyot!)
I hope to see you soon at a tefilah, children's program, event, or class!
Shabbat Shalom & Chodesh Tov,
Rabbi Ben Kean

MESSAGE FROM RABBI KEAN
On behalf of Congregation Beth Abraham-Jacob, I would like to wish you and your family a restful and meaningful Shabbat.
I would like to thank everyone for helping make Tisha B'Av a meaningful day of mourning and commemoration at CBAJ. In particular, I would like to recognize our Eikhah readers, Ra'anan Schwarzmer, Seth Rosenblum, Rabbi Silton (and myself); our Torah reader; Eitan Barlaz, our Haftarah reader, Michael Willen; those who delivered talks on Kinot Tisha B'Av morning, Rabbi Bomzer, Rabbi Silton, Rabbi Elon Weintraub, & Rabbi Rami Strosberg; and all of those who helped with setup and cleanup.
This Shabbat is known as Shabbat Nachamu, named after the Haftarah from this week which begins, "Be comforted, be comforted, My people--says your G-d" (Isaiah 40:1). Even in the immediate aftermath of tragedy, we are promised that our sins are forgiven and that Israel will be restored to its former glory.
This is a message that we ought to take with us in every situation that we find ourselves in every time--the truth that whatever sorrow we experience, G-d tells us to be comforted, for we are still his people.
I hope to see you soon at a tefilah, children's program, event, or class!
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Ben Kean

MESSAGE FROM RABBI KEAN
On behalf of Congregation Beth Abraham-Jacob, I would like to wish you and your family a restful and meaningful Shabbat.
Yesterday was the yahrzeit of two very influential rabbis, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson (the Lubavitcher Rebbe) and Rabbi Yehoshua Yeshaya Neuwirth (author of Shemirat Shabbat Ke'Hilchata), zichronam livracha.
The occasion of their yahrzeits is a wonderful opportunity to learn more and reflect on the legacies of these leaders, whose impacts are very much felt to this day. I do not expect you to have too much trouble finding a plethora of meaningful tributes to the Rebbe - there many books, videos, articles of all kinds available. For a brief tribute to the legacy of R. Neuwirth, I would recommend this column published by Rabbi Eliezer Melamed, which touches on his lifestory, his groundbreaking work, and the impact it had on Halachic literature.
I hope to see you soon at a tefilah, children's program, event, or class!
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Ben Kean
